A 2-hour hands-on overview of the programming language R and the basis of statistical computing.

We realize that this is a difficult time for everyone and would like to provide resources to help you adjust to working from home. This guide provides resources for starting a new remote position.

Scientific Talks

Weekly seminar hosted by the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. Guest speakers from all over the world discuss groundbreaking research in Cardiovascular disease.

Stanford Online works closely with Stanford schools, departments, programs, and centers to develop a catalog of courses and programs to help with education, career skills and personal development. Students may be particularly interested in their free courses on Case Studies in Medical Errors, Hypertension in Primary Care, and Molecular Foundations of Medicine.

iBiology's mission is to convey, in the form of open-access free videos, the excitement of modern biology and the process by which scientific discoveries are made. Their aim is to let you meet the leading scientists in biology, so that you can find out how they think about scientific questions and conduct their research, and can get a sense of their personalities, opinions, and perspectives. Students may be particularly interested in Introduction to microRNAsA Change of Heart: Heart Development from Embryo to Adult, and Designing Effective Presentations.

Being successful as a scientist requires more than acquiring knowledge and developing experimental skills. It also requires: (1) asking a good scientific question, (2) establishing a clear plan of action, and (3) seeking advice along the way. These three topics are the focus of iBiology’s course, "Planning Your Scientific Journey."

Using a customized version of iBiology’s “Let’s experiment,” scientists from a variety of backgrounds will give concrete steps and advice to help you build a framework for how to design experiments in biological research.

Career Development Organizations

Supports a range of services for Stanford students to help them optimize their learning potential. These include academic skills coaching, tutoring, and language practice.

The Hume Center provides support via one-to-one tutoring, small group consultations, and workshops. The center also cooperates with faculty from all departments across the Stanford campus and School of Medicine to support their use of writing and speaking as they teach their courses.

BEAM

Bridging Education, Ambition, and Meaningful Work

The program provides career guidance via a series of courses, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring to students, in addition to hosting career-related events and facilitating connections between students and Stanford Alumni.

The American Heart Association has local chapters for individuals interested in advocacy. This spreadsheet contains contact details for many AHA affiliates around the country. Reach out to Angela Johnson at the AHA if your region is not included or you would like additional information.

ABRCMS

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), recipient of the 2019 AIMBE Excellence in STEM Education Award, is one of the largest communities of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students attend this conference to present their research, enhance professional development skills, explore graduate schools, and network. We encourage our students to present their work at this conference.

The D&A Office provides an array of services and resources designed to ensure equal opportunity and equal access, and to address bias and discrimination prohibited by law or official University policy. The D&A Office also assists individuals with disabilities who have requests for accommodations in the workplace and access to Stanford facilities, programs and activities.

The DGen office has a special focus on enriching the experience of first-generation and low-income college students at Stanford, who historically have reported feeling out of place on campus. The DGen aids these students by supporting their academic and social transitions as they arrive on campus, facilitating empowerment and providing opportunities for community building with different groups across campus. The Office runs a highly successful mentoring program.
