Dr. Sean M. Wu Receives NIH Director's Pioneer Award

The CVI would like to warmly congratulate Dr. Sean M. Wu, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, and Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, for receiving the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award.

Sean was previously an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and came to Stanford in the fall of 2012 as the first recruit for the Stanford CVI. Sean has had tremendous success here at Stanford over the past 2 years, first receiving the Endowed Faculty Scholar of Child Health Research Institute (2013) and now the Pioneer Award (2014).

The NIH Director’s Pioneer Award, now in its 11th year, carries a five-year, $2.5 million direct cost research support plus indirect cost to be used in highly innovative approaches that have the potential to affect a broad area of biomedical or behavioral research. Sean's project titled “Enabling Technologies for Human-Machine Hybrid Tissue” will explore the use of 3D-printing to assemble complex array of interfaces between synthetic and biological materials. This technology could be applicable to generate hybrid tissues or artificial organs for future cardiovascular applications.
